Mount Washington Cog Railway - New Hampshire's Most Breathtaking Scenic Vacation Experience

My family and I (me = 39, wife "holding at 29", 18, 17, 15, & 6) were thrilled to have my parents up for a vacation from North Carolina. Whenever they are visiting we always go and experience the best the region has to offer. On the most recent visit we chose to go experience the Mount Washington Cog Railway.

I had reserved our reservations over a month in advance for the cog. The day of our adventure to the summit of Mt. Washington the weather was in the upper seventies, light wind but rain was in the forecast. We kept waffling on whether we should go or not and as a result we were running late for our reservations. We made it to the base station with less than five minutes to spare. We hustled through the station picked up our tickets and headed out to the historic Mount Washington Cog. My father, boys and I took time to inspect the pristine cog engine and historic train car. This was the perfect distraction for my father who is seriously not impressed with heights or the thought of riding anything to the top of a mountain. As we approached the cog's passenger car, we were greeted by two "brakemen". They happily accepted our tickets and smirked at several of us who wore shorts and flip flops. Their smirks were the equivalent of foreshadowing in a good book. We boarded and quickly realized that we were the only ones riding this late afternoon train to the summit. As the cog started the climb, one of the brakemen came in and introduced himself. He went on to share some interesting facts about the history of the Mount Washington Cog Railway and the construction of the scenic railroad. The ride itself is best described as slow and steady. The kids were encouraged to open windows, enjoy the sights and ask questions. The poor weather conditions helped keep grandpa's nerves in check as you could not see more than a few hundred feet in any direction. The cog railway was literally in the clouds shortly after leaving the base station. The brakeman pointed out that Mt. Washington proudly boasts to be "Home of the World's Worst Weather". He went on to say that Mt. Washington's summit temperatures this afternoon were in the low 40s with wind gusts exceeding 70 mph. Instantly, the brakemen's smirks reappeared. We appeared to be approximately halfway up Mt. Washington and I was pretty sure he was pulling our leg. He went on to say that the cog was going up today only because conditions were forecasted to stay the same or lessen. The cog railway will not climb Mount Washinton when wind conditions are exceeding 75mph. As we officially passed the halfway point of the mountain, I was still pretty sure the brakeman was "exaggerating". The winds remained mild, rain was light and the temperature didn't appear to have changed much. As the cog continued its Mount Washington climb, we left behind us the tree line where almost all plant life ceases to exist. No sooner did the trees disappear than I noticed the kids putting windows back up. The wind began to howl, temperatures plummeted, and rain/sleet beat on the cog. To clarify, having grown up in Miami, I've lived through enough hurricanes that I have lost count...the winds were screaming. Minutes later we came to a stop and the brakemen announced that we had reached the summit. We thanked and tipped the brakemen for their exceptional service. Upon exiting the cog's passenger car we were met with hurricane force winds, sleet and rain...all of which were going sideways and stung our skin. Flip flops and all, we quickly scurried into the Mount Washington observatory building. Inside we found bathrooms (the ride up is 40+ minutes long), two gift shops, a cafeteria offering "acceptable" quality food with fair pricing, and an interesting museum. Admission to the Mount Washington observatory museum is included in the price of riding the cog railway. I would not pay separately for the museum but enjoyed it none the less. The museum's highlight is a massive panoramic view from the summit showing what could be seen if a hurricane was not currently consuming the mountains summit. After a brief bite to eat, I ventured out with my two boys for a short walk to the observation platform. The boys delighted in the weather conditions and braved them long enough to climb the rock formation to the posted summit of Mt. Washington. We went back inside and were able to coax several more members outside and up to the platform. Experiencing weather conditions like that was both thrilling, entertaining and a highlight of the trip. We all gathered back together just in time to board the near capacity cog railway for the return trip to the base station. I sat in the first row of the cog's passenger car. On the way down Mt. Washington the brakeman earns his name. He stands vigilantly watching the cog's engine descend the mountain. Should the cog's multiple brake systems fail, the brakeman would manually be able to stop the car. I was interested to learn that the passenger car is and never was actually attached to the cog's engine. Both during the ascent and decent the passenger car is leaning against the engine. As we reached the halfway point of the mountain, the sky briefly cleared allowing for some beautiful scenic photos. I honestly cannot imagine how amazing the views would be on a perfectly clear day. My six year old loves foxes and was thrilled when we saw a family of them next to the railroad. We arrived safely back at the base station and took time to explore the hands-on museum and gift shop.

FINAL REVIEW: Everyone in our group LOVED the experience and rated the Mount Washington Cog Railway an absolute "do not miss". We all suggest to not let weather conditions determine whether or not you and your family ride the cog. While the observatory was nice...the crazy weather was the memorable factor. Be sure to bring and use a waterproof camera. Anyone that has a fear of heights should sit on the right side of the cog railway while climbing Mount Washington and on the left when coming back down. "Good ol'Grandpa" was fine and said sitting on the suggested side of the cog's passenger car was beneficial. All in all it was a great experience and we highly recommend adding a visit to Mt. Washington's summit to your northern New Hampshire or Vermont Vacation.

We had an amazing time this year at the Caledonian County Relay for Life event. This was the sixth anniversary for the fundraiser. I'm proud to say that our community has raised more than one million dollars in that period of time. Speaking of proud...my fellow team members of "Hotels for Hope" did an amazing job. They left the event having won one of only four awards that are issued annually. They earned and were awarded the "Team Spirit Award".

Everyone on our team took on different responsibilities. I was the lone chef cooking hundreds of hot dogs, hamburgers, and sausage. Some team members decorated our "fair themed" tents, others walked the track, some sold food and plush animals from our site, individuals volunteered to dress up and participate in the hourly themed walks, we had a team of runners at midnight that ran for an hour straight, etc. It was an amazing 24 hours for those that did it straight through. I was beyond exhausted the next morning as the sun came up. It was time to tear down and load up. I slept most of the day Sunday knowing that our team gave 110%. Everyone should be proud of their participation.

Speaking of proud, Gracie, my "just turned 6" year old didn't understand the concept of the midnight relay race. When the race began, she took off and didn't look back. For the the first lap or two, she ran by herself. By her third lap, she had befriended a young woman that was running individual laps. Around and around they went. Teams setup around the track started cheering them on. After nine laps, I finally stepped in and put an end to Grace's mini-marathon. Grace ran a total of 2.25 miles that evening. Prior to the midnight race, she had already walked countless laps. Needless to say, Grace slept well for several hours that night and most of the next day.

In the end we raised more than $5000 dollars as a team. Our goal for 2010 is to double that amount. A huge "THANK YOU" to all my team members and our amazing supporters!!!

Hotels for Hope - June 12, 2010

In only our second year, we have DOUBLED the size of our Relay for Life team. We had approximately 30 employees participate in 2009. This coming year we are expecting more than 60 team members. To say I'm proud of my hotels' employees would be a huge understatement!

Hotels for Hope was founded in the memory of Mary Gistis. Mary lost a courageous battle with cancer in March of 2009. Her passing led to discussions at each of my hotels. Sadly, many of my managers and staff also had personal stories of loved ones that had succumbed to this dreaded disease. While we will always honor Mary's memory first and foremost, our Relay for Life team has evolved into a memorial for all of our loved ones that have passed. We also take time to be recognize and be thankful for our cancer survivors. Our surviors give us hope and confidence that a cure will be found.

I lost my first friend to cancer after completing the eighth grade. Shannon fought for more than a year before losing her tragic battle. At the ripe old age of twelve years old, I already understood the devastation that cancer can bring to a family and a community. I'll never forget her uncle speaking at our eighth grade graduation and announcing that Shannon's cancer had progressed and that the outcome was not expected to be good. I promised to never forget Shannon and all these years later, I've held true to my word. She was an amazing person and will always be missed.

Cancer has gone on to take multiple loved ones from me over the past twenty-five years. Unfortunately, this past year my family lost a friend and relative. By far, losing my grandmother was the hardest. Her unexpected passing led me to get early cancer screenings. These screenings have on two out of three occasions led to the doctors telling me "you may have just dodged a bullet". While these screenings are "less than pleasant", I know that they are in my best interest and I will get them regularly.

On the bright side, advancements in cancer treatment appear to have saved my children's incredible grandmother this past year. She is an amazing woman that continues the battle. Improving cancer treatments and the possibility of finding a cure are what Relay for Life is all about. I'm convinced many of my friends and loved ones would still be here today with the new tests, medicines, and technology that are available. These advancements in medicine and eventually finding a cure are why my team participates in the Relay for Life.

More than a year and a half ago, I decided to convert my St. Johnsbury, Vermont hotel into an eco-friendly green property. My decision to "do the right thing" was based on many factors. First and foremost, the hotel's guests regularly wrote comment cards requesting green alternatives. The quaint village of St. Johnsbury is located in the heart of the Vermont's Green Mountains and is the gateway to the majestic "Northeast Kingdom". I understood our guests holding us to a higher standard and expectation. Ultimately, we agreed that we should do our part to preserve the natural beauty of the land around us. It should be stated for the record...I was not a "tree hugger" (not that there is anything wrong with hugging a tree). I've owned a pair (or two) of Birkenstocks, but "treehugger" was not often used to describe me. Two years later, I have to admit that what started as a test project has become much more important to me. I was impressed when my team of managers and staff supported the initial concepts. One person's idea led to another and before long we were addicted to saving energy and implementing eco-friendly concepts. The hotel's guests have joined in and are encouraged to submit their suggestions (many of which we have adopted). People and businesses avoid going green because they think it will cost to much. The truth is by "doing what is right"...we've improved guest satisfaction as well as increased our profitability. Eighteen months later we have implemented more than a dozen significant eco-friendly initiatives (and we're still not done). In the process, we've received nothing but praise and appreciation from our guests. Our guests are not the only ones that took notice. Next month we will be receiving an award from Jim Douglas, the Governor of Vermont. The award recognizes our steps in becoming a green hotel.

- Operate an extensive recycling program...a blue box in the bathroom allows guests to place all their recyclables into one bin...we do the rest.

When a walk is more than just "a walk" - hiking in New Hampshire's White Mountains and Vermont's Green Mountains

There is something about walking in the woods of northern New Hampshire and Vermont that transcends the average jaunt into the countryside. Exploring the White Mountains of New Hampshire or the Green Mountains of Vermont can be rewarding on many levels. First and foremost, it's quiet...real quiet. I love that you never know what you will see or experience. I've heard about people practicing the art of walking meditation, I can't imagine it being much different than the hikes my boys and I take into our local mountains. From the first steps on to the trail, to summiting the mountain's crest, each step along the way is rewarding and an experience unto itself.

Just over a week ago, while we were experiencing unseasonably warm temperatures, my oldest son and I decided to go for a hike. I swear his obsession with the woods has been there since birth. He's grown up wanting to spend his life outdoors. Hiking, mountain biking, cycling, skiing, fishing, hunting or four wheeling...doesn't matter what the season...he's in the woods. Over the years, I've given him the responsibility of deciding where we are going and leading the way. At an early age he loved the responsibility of choosing our trail and being the "guide". In my book, "guide" translates to the person carrying the most amount of weight in their backpack. Personally, I loved the fact that I didn't have to think and someone else was in charge. Early on I decided we make a good team. For our first hike of the year, he chose an old favorite located in the White Mountain National Forest. We started the hike shortly after noon. Approximately two hours into into a 3+ hour climb, he stopped abrubtly and I ran square into his backpack. After blurting out some random "thoughts/suggestions", I saw what had him "hitting the brakes". Just off to our left in a marsh was a HUGE moose and her calf. Now I've seen moose before, most of the time they are grazing at sunset on the side of the New Hampshire and Vermont roads. Never had I been face to face with a moose in the wild. Fact #1...Moose are big (think "Clydesdale big" with funny skinny legs)! Only to make me more nervous was the fact that said moose was with it's baby. Fact #2...Mothers are protective! I should mention that every moose I had ever personally seen looked like they were posing for a postcard. The males were monstrous and always had amazingly large racks/antlers.

Well, one lesson learned that day is that moose are "scary ugly" in the spring. These were not "postcard moose". Fact #3...Moose are REALLY UGLY in the Spring. Both the mom and baby had survived the winter by growing a thick dense fur. Due to the warmer than usual weather, they were well into the the process of shedding their winter coats. The end result was two moose that looked like they were wearing camouflage. The mother was never aggressive and the calf never strayed more than ten feet from mom. They allowed us to sit on a rock and watch them for almost fifteen minutes before deciding to mosey on into to forest. It was an amazing experience.

No matter what trail you choose, you'll need good footwear and at minimum a small backpack for water, snacks, camera, etc. Please hike responsibly and make sure that whatever you bring in comes out with you..."leave no trace" is our family's motto when in the woods.

I'm proud to say that my son, Matthew who will be graduating high school next year is planning on a career in the great outdoors. He plans to attend college in pursuit of a game warden's job as his life's ambition. Who would have ever thought... we actually found a career in the woods (just wish I had been able to get a picture of it).

Burke, Burke, Burke...

I'm biased...I readily admit it.
I LOVE BURKE MOUNTAIN!

I learned to ski in my early thirties at Burke Mountain. I had heard so many great stories about skiing Burke, that one day I packed up my kids and decided we were going to become "skiers" or "boarders". I remember walking out the front door, my wife kissing me good-bye and telling all of us (me specifically) to be safe. I was convinced the kids were more than old enough to take on the challenge. My oldest daughter and son quickly decided that they were skiers. My youngest son and I were determined to be rebels and ride boards. After arriving, renting equipment, each of us went off to our individual instructors. My early experiences riding the j-bar were "interesting". As I struggled just to get up the bunny hill, my kids were slowly gliding downhill with their instructors. Occasionally, they would look at me with sympathy and wave awkwardly. I'm not sure whether it was during day one or two of snowboarding lessons, but I had amassed enough self-inflicted bone bruises to decide that I was not a boarder.

After picking up the broken pieces of my ego, I was left with trying to ski. Something about my legs potentially going in two distinctly different directions while sliding 30-40 mph on snow/ice...just had me concerned. To everyone's amazement (mostly mine), I was a natural born skier. After one weekend of lessons, I was parallel skiing from mid-Burke. Within a week or two I was skiing from the top of the mountain. I've never seriously hurt myself and despite stories around my family's dinner table...I think I am a pretty decent skier.

There was the time after a minor fall that I didn't properly lock on my ski before preceding down a steep section of the mountain. It wasn't long before the unattached ski went in one direction and I (after trying to ski on one foot) went another. Then there was my first and only attempt at skiing the trees. I won't get into the specifics but my body did things that defy gravity and physics. I figure two funny stories over ten years isn't half bad.

Over the years, I've made it a point ski mountains throughout New Hampshire and Vermont. Each has had advantages and disadvantages. For the college crowd...there are better party mountains. For those that genuinely enjoy risking their lives...there are plenty of icy New England slopes to conquer. For those that appreciate skiing versus standing in lift lines...Burke. If you enjoy immaculately groomed classic ski trails versus massive open corridors...Burke. If you are looking for a mountain that can provide challenges for an Olympian as well as lessons for a beginner...Burke. Burke is hands down the most family oriented and non-pretentious mountain I've ever had the pleasure of skiing.

All these years later, I am still a laid back skier. Slow and steady...I enjoy taking in all the views and just being outdoors. My kids...well...for the most part I haven't seen anything but the back of their jackets in years. Of course, they still take a moment to wave awkwardly when they catch a view of me gliding along.

"Don't confuse activity with accomplishment" - Bill Belichick

It was a long drive north from Foxboro after watching my beloved Patriots get crushed in the first round of the playoffs. While driving, I was able to listen to Tom Brady talk around the disfunction that ran rampant in the Patriots locker room this past season. He was kind and went out of his way to not throw any of the deserving players in front of the bus. He spoke of the quality and character of the individuals that were on the team. He never said they actually formed a team...just that individually they may have been the best 52 man roster he had ever played with. He went on to throw similar accolades at Bill Belichick and his ability to coach men as well as the game of football. He referenced a season of ups and down that revolved around inconsistency. One practice was perfect, as everyone was dialed in. The next day, half the team would mentally check-out and the practice was pointless. During the interview, Brady quoted Bill Belichick as regularly saying, "Don't confuse activity with accomplishment". Just because the players phisically showed up and broke a sweat didn't mean a single facet of the game plan was being accomplished. Trust me when I say, it showed on game day, all season long. This group of men may have worn the same uniform but they were not a team. Individually they may have worked extremely hard but they most certainly were never going to accomplish the goal set before them.

I hadn't heard Belichick's quote before and for whatever reason it struck a cord with me. In my history managing people and operating hotels, I have encountered hundreds of people that are active or appear to be active and accomplish very little. Early in my career, I spent a ridiculous amount of time, money and energy trying to convince them that there was a better way. For the past ten years, I have made a conscious effort to surround myself with people who see the goal and work towards it. They don't spin their wheels in an effort to prove that they are doing something. They work. Not only do they work but they work "smart". They understand the difference between getting the job done and getting the job done right. At each one of my hotels, they work as a team. Everyone of us understands that there is no single person less or more important than the other.

At my properties, we have the right coaches in place. We have the right assistant coaches to provide the leadership and accountability needed to be a success. We have players that trust in the philosophy of the team and believe by working smart that we will accomplish our goals. My team members and I know that the nations economy has collapsed. We accept that business in our industry is down 10-25%. Instead of accepting a decrease in business and making the cuts necessary to continue operating, we've taken on the challenge and won. We are adding people...not cutting jobs. We are creating business like never before. We don't sit back and wait for you to call...we show up on your doorstep. We know you have choices and we genuinely thank you for staying with us.

So as we go into the year 2010, I have mighty high expectations for my hotels and their overall success. As far as the Patriots go, not so much. You cannot draft or recruit leadership. It grows from within. Right now they need to take a long hard look at what made them successful and start at the bottom up.

Saying "Thanks"...all year long

This time of year many people are inspired by the holiday season to show appreciation and say "thanks". While its certainly nice to extend your appreciation to co-workers, friends and family. I would suggest that we would all be better served by sharing our feelings throughout the year.

I for one go out of my way to make sure that the people closest to me know how much I appreciate their help, direction, and support. I do it daily (sometimes hourly). I've often wondered if it ever gets old for them...I've wondered if they even hear it after a while. I've decided that the impact on them is probably equaled by the impact on me. Showing appreciation is as important to give as it is to receive. It makes the world go round.

As we go into the new year, make the single best resolution possible...make 2010 the year of saying "thanks". Let your actions say "thanks". If you employ people...thank them daily/hourly. Hire people that understand the importance of saying "thank you". In this economic climate...has there ever been a time in our lives that was more important to thank the customer. I have a policy in my hotels, every guest is to be thanked a minimum of five times during each stay. The four "gimmes" are while booking their reservation, at check-in, in the breakfast room, and at check-out. The staff simply needs to find one additional time during a guests stay to say thank you (hallways, elevators, etc.). The impact??? Well, guests are convinced that I drug my employees or have sprinkled pixie dust over them. The culture of appreciation carries over to the relationships among my team members. We work in an environment of mutual appreciation. Not exactly the norm in a lot of businesses today.

One of my all time favorite books is the "Ultimate Gift". I loved it so much that I gave a copy to each and every one of my employees. In the book, ten life lessons are taught. The life lesson "Gift of Gratitude" compels you to spend a minute or two each morning before rolling out of bed and identify ten things you are grateful for. Several years ago, after our first visit to the Bahamas, my wife and I promised each other that we would go back annually. With four school-age children, my wife running a daycare and me overseeing four hotels, by the time September rolls around each year...we seriously need to recharge our batteries.

On our first visit to the Bahamas we befriended an incredible local bartender, Christal. On our first encounter, she introduced me to a drink she created called the "Comfort Zone". I am still convinced that the drink is 98% 151 rum, 1% juice and 1% ice. I think the drink should be renamed "Island Time". After flying for half the day, clearing customs, getting ground transportation, checking-in, unpacking... just one of her drinks lets you know... you are officially on "Island Time". Christal works at one of the best swim up bars on Pleasure Island, located at the Comfort Suites, Paradise Island.

On our last visit, my wife, Christal and I were talking about the different hotels that I manage (just what I want to be doing on vacation). As a result, the next night, I brought Christal a business card and brochure. For years, we've been trying to convince Christal that she and her family should visit northern New England. Christal has always joked that it is too cold in August to visit New England, never mind any other time of the year.

It was the following night that Christal left me with my jaw on the ground... no it wasn't because I had too many "Comfort Zone/Island Time" drinks. After sitting down at the bar, Chrystal excused herself. To my amazement, Christal returned holding a postcard of and from my hotel in Saint Johnsbury, Vermont. To put it mildly I was confused and was looking for some explanation. After flipping the postcard over, I noticed that the card had been sent back in 2003 and was addressed to Christal. The sender had written that the hotel "was really nice! The grounds were breathtaking - so pretty".

Apparently my wife and I are not alone in our appreciation for the job Christal does. Christal went on to explain that the two people who had sent her the postcard were also regulars of the island and fans of her mixology skills. After a visit seven years ago, they left the island and toured northern New England. Their travels brought them to my Vermont hotel. They simply sent Christal a postcard letting her know that they were thinking of her. Each employee of the hotel, keeps a safety deposit box for valuables and other items. The postcard has sat in that box for almost seven years as a reminder of some of Christal's favorite guests. The whole experience was strangely ironic. Needless to say, since returning to my hotel, I have reprinted the complimentary in-room postcards. Three large postcards are now available for our weary travelers. Guests have stopped by daily thanking us for the postcards. My staff smiles each time they are left at the desk to be mailed... wondering where I might find them on one of my next travels.

Remember "Hannibal" from the show A-Team??? For those of you that don't...Colonel John H. "Hannibal" Smith led a band of misfit retired soldiers on mission after mission to help a needy cause. Nothing ever went as planned. Yet, by the end of each show, the team was always successful.

All the pieces of the puzzle miraculously would fall into place, and Hannibal would exclaim "I love it when a plan comes together!".

Our first weekend with the Bonkers comedy club in Burlington Vermont was a tremendous success!!! Hundreds and hundreds of people flocked to the Hampton Inn, Burlington for the grand opening of our Bonkers Comedy Club. The local management team that pulled this off, should be incredibly proud of themselves (Maureen, Jim, Vicky, Darcy, Joe...they're my version of the A-Team...except leave out the part about them being misfits). Another huge thank you to our sponsor's WIZN (Classic Rock that REALLY Rocks) and Bud Light...we could not do it without your help and support.

And as Hannibal would say..."I love it when a plan comes together!"

GREAT JOB!!!

Friday night was our grand opening. We had an acoustic act from 7-8pm. It gave attendees time to have a drink, mingle, grab a bite to eat and settle in for what promised to be a great night of Comedy. At eight o'clock the opening act, took the stage and warmed up the crowd. By 8:30...Artie Fletcher "New York City's Bad Boy of Comedy" hit the stage like I have never seen before. It was obvious from the start that Artie knows the region well and had played the Burlington market in the past. Fans from days gone by, had called in and reserved their seats in advance. You could tell it was special for both them and Artie. Artie was enjoying himself so much that he ran 30 to 45 minutes long. On multiple occasions, he said . "Okay, this is the last one"...15 minutes later he was still up on stage, sharing stories and having a great time. At the end of the show, Artie took time to sign autographs, sell CDs and take pictures with the fans.

Afterwards, we headed over to the Hampton Inn's on-site restaurant T-bones. There we discussed our plans for New Year's. While not all the details are worked out, I am pretty sure we will be ringing in the New Year on "Fletcher Time". We are already planning our own "stimulus packages" for this very special evening.

Today's the day...I am seriously pumped! Our new BONKERZ comedy club is set to open in just a few hours. In addition to running a large hotel in West Virginia. Chronicle on WCVB TV Boston - Explores St. Johnsbury and Vermont's Northeast Kingdom

If the old adage of "a picture is worth a thousand words" is true...streaming video on Vermont's majestic Northeast Kingdom must be worth a trillion. WCVB TV Channel 5's Chronicle out of Boston aired a wonderful thirty-minute special last night on why you should escape the rat race and rejuvenate in Northern Vermont. Having grown up in southern New England, I know firsthand why people vacation in what is now...my backyard.

Driving up I-93, the first sense of relief will occur when you come through Franconia Notch State Park and get a glimpse of New Hampshire's "North Country" and Vermont's "Northeast Kingdom". Less than 3 hours north of Boston, Vermont's Northeast Kingdom is far enough away from southern New England to make it feel "special". Truth is...it is special. It is clean, it is safe, it is unassuming, it is unique and it is very much like going back in time. The best part...Vermont's Northeast Kingdom is close enough to visit multiple times in a month (just ask my snowmobiling and skiing enthusiasts). When I-93 ends...you're officially "there". I mean "here"...I mean in St. Johnsbury. For those that are directionally challenged...let me just reiterate the directions from Boston...I-93 North til' it ends...ok, that's it.

Vacationers coming north on I-91 experience the same stunning views but approach them in a slower and less dramatic fashion. Foothills in western Massachusetts, roll into southern Vermont and continue to the White River Junction region. North of White River the 60 minute drive offers some of the most breathtaking views in all of New England. Be sure to take a few minutes at the rest areas to "stop" and "start" the rejuvenating process. A well-placed picnic table, breathtaking views and a cup of freshly brewed java can go along way towards setting the pace for the rest of your vacation. "You're on island time" is a standard phrase in the Bahamas to remind vacationers that there is no rush or reason to hurry. The same applies in the kingdom..."You're on green mountain time"...slow down and take it all in.

5000 miles of Vermont's Magical Winter Highway...New England's Best Snowmobiling is in Northern Vermont and New Hampshire!!!

Over ten years ago, I moved to Northern Vermont. My children were young and collectively we were happy to be back in New England (home of the three time World Champion...NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS...but I digress). We moved here in the spring and experienced a glorious Vermont spring, summer, and fall. As winter approached, we became concerned when the first snow fell in early October. My wife and I didn't ski at the time and were not sure how we would adjust to the long winter season. Having grown up in southern New England, I was use to snow but not to the extreme that the locals described. The first winter started snowing in early November and didn't stop until mid-April. For the first time in my life, I experienced what hundreds of inches of snow was like. We were introduced to the sport of snowmobiling early that year and it wasn't long before we owned our own "sled" (you'll need to speak language). If you have never been...you have no idea what you are missing!

The "Vermont Association of Snow Travelers" aka VAST maintains 5000 miles of groomed snowmobiling trails across privately owned land. Over the years, I have taken hundreds of friends and family members snowmobiling that have never been before. Amazing day trips into the Northeast Kingdom for winter picnics, wildlife viewing and breath taking scenery. Every person has made a point of saying that the experience is one they will remember for a lifetime. Be forewarned that it is an extremely addicting hobby and not particularly inexpensive. If you are interested in trying it for a day or a weekend, a local company All Around Rental will deliver sleds and helmets directly to the hotel. You can rent their equipment for several hours or days. The trail system is mapped out in amazing detail and allows riders to navigate the backwoods of Vermont with ease. The Comfort Inn and Suites, St. Johnsbury, Vermont is "home away from home" to thousands of snowmobilers annually. They snowmobilers arrive in mid-December and are here until the end of March. The trail system connects to the back of the hotel which allows guests to ride directly from the hotel. Snowmobiles are parked in the front circles of the hotel and make for quite a scene when everyone is warming up their engines. A two stroke fog bank hovers over the hotel each morning. It's a sight to be seen.

We now have a snowmobile access trail out of my Hampton Inn, Littleton, New Hampshire. Riders can leave the hotel for the day and ride over to Franconia Notch State Park. Once there, plan to take the aerial tram to the top of Cannon Mountain for lunch. It'll make for one memorable day.

Snowmobiling can be dangerous. Never drink and ride. Always stay right and use proper hand signals when encountering fellow snowmobilers. One last piece of advice...dress appropriately. Skiing gear is designed to allow for the evaporation of sweat produced while skiing. When riding a snowmobile, such gear would result in frost bite in a short period of time. Snowmobiling gear blocks the cold out and keeps your body heat trapped inside. Trust me when I say there is a huge difference and that the two should not be confused.

Economics 101 meets the "Wheeler"

I'm always proud of my kids. I'm proud of them on many levels but this summer my two boys really impressed me. Over the past few months, they learned the value of a hard earned dollar. The best part was watching them learn it...more specifically, watching them learn it two different ways.

For the past few years, my oldest, Matthew, has been working for me on the hotel's maintenance staff. He's always been eager to learn and loves getting his hands dirty.

At the beginning of the summer, Cass, my youngest son approached me and asked if he could work at one of the inns. After speaking with the managers, the only position we were hiring for was housekeeping. I wasn't sure how he would respond but was pleasantly surprised when he jumped at the opportunity. He knew that I had started in the industry "cleaning toilets and making beds". He also knows that everyone pays their dues in life...one way or another. Cass was the target of some serious ribbing from his older brother and friends. He took it all in stride..."you're going to look so cute in a skirt and waving a feather duster". Cass wanted to work and was determined to make the most of it. From day one...he loved working! He loved his team members, he loved the sense of accomplishment, and he REALLY loved pay day.

In no time, our entire family had to endure the nightly squabbles at the dinner table, who's job was harder...who's job was more important...it got old quickly. With their new found wealth, discussions quickly turned to what they would spend the money on. The decision was made, both would be purchasing four wheelers. They grew up driving mine and I was confident that they were more than capable of having their own "wheelers" (ya' have to know the lingo). Each boy had a plan...Cass was paying cash and getting an older "fixer upper". Matthew was going for the newer high-end model...as well as securing a loan to make the purchase.

Both love riding their wheelers. Trail riding is abundant around our home situated on top of a mountain. A few short miles through the woods and the "Top of the World" ATV club in Concord, Vermont offers an amazing trail system. Riders from all over New England converge on northern New Hampshire and Vermont for the regions amazing ATV trail riding. New Hampshire's ATV trail system is just 15-30 minutes away. They offer four completely different trails systems ranging from 20 to 120 miles long. The trails are mapped out and allow for amazing day trips into the rugged wilderness.

As summer drew to a close, Cass, a high school freshman, explained to me that he planned to do his part to stimulate our nation's economy. I watched as he made one purchase after another. First a ridiculously huge TV showed up in his room, next an Xbox 360, and by the start of the school year...a quality laptop.

Matthew on the other hand...is still making payments and can barely afford gas for his truck never mind his four wheeler.

Cass is now given up on the economy and is saving towards his first vehicle. The moral of the story...life lessons don't always come cheap or easy.

Oh, and by the way, in my humble opinion...neither job is "easy" but housekeeping is SIGNIFICANTLY harder than maintenance!

Foliage From A Whole New Perspective

The changing of the seasons is my favorite time of year. Visitors from around the world flock to our region to experience the foliage. Majestic purples, blood reds, stunning yellows, and bright oranges cover the rolling hills and mountains. Mother nature at her very best.

My family and I are always taking advantage of the region's attractions and natural wonders. Recently, I received an offer from the Mount Washington Resort "Bretton Woods Canopy Tour" to take a complimentary ride on their tree top zip lines. I'm an adventurous soul but there is something about sliding on steel lines high above the ground that simply isn't happening. Doesn't mean that I'm not intrigued by the concept...but count me out. I didn't need to go far to find someone in my hotel to take advantage of the offer. Brandi, my hotel's front office manager, jumped at the opportunity to go "zipping".

This past weekend, she and her boyfriend, Nate experienced the canopy tour. Monday morning Brandi was all smiles and couldn't wait to share her pictures. She went on to describe getting her "zipping" gear on (WARNING...according to Nate...the harness is not exactly "comfortable"), being driven to the top of a ski mountain and hooking on to the first zip line. She said the first time or two was nerve racking. After that, they settled in and enjoyed the entire experience. More specifically...they LOVED it!!! The views were described as truly breathtaking. Brandi reported that the guides were extremely professional and fun to be with. The overall experience was given an A+++ (even after being forced to wear those sexy helmets). Obviously, it is not an experience for those that have a fear of heights. In addition, there is just a little bit of hiking between zip lines.

As Brandi said..."There is no better way to see the foliage or have a memorable day. I'll never forget this experience".

My wife and I just returned from an amazing trip to the Bahamas.

I could go on and on about Paradise Island, pool bars, beaches, crystal clear ocean, or learning to scuba dive but the experience that most impressed me was very unexpected...JetBlue.

I fly five to ten times a year. I fly out of Burlington, Manchester, and Boston depending on my destination. For whatever reason, I have never flown JetBlue. Yes, I had heard about the TVs, legroom, and service but our paths had never crossed. On this recent trip, JetBlue simply was the easy choice. Not knowing what to expect, I looked forward to experiencing the airline.

It started at check-in...my bag (not my wife's) was over the weight limit. After weighing both our bags, the two people at the counter said "we" are repacking your bags so you don't get charged extra. Syrup (we were bringing as gifts), snorkeling gear, and some clothes were moved from one suitcase to the other. Both agents smiled as the bags weighed in at 49 pounds each and followed it up with "Mr. and Mrs. Loehr thanks for flying with us...have an awesome vacation". Happy to have avoided the overweight charge, appreciative of the service...off we went to the terminal. I'm convinced that through osmosis the JetBlue culture has even infected the TSA agents. There was no screaming about shoes, lighters, laptops, or liquids. They smiled...I'm serious...I had a TSA agent look me right in the eye and SMILE!!! They actually welcomed us, did their jobs and ushered us through the security gauntlet with no wand waving, pat downs, or special screening. We were two for two so far...I wanted to see how far this would go. Boarding the plane was uneventful except for the gate agent who after taking our ticket stubs said "We appreciate you flying with us...happy jetting". I was honestly impressed.

The seats were leather, they were large, great leg room, and the TV was a blessing (football was on). Before taking off the pilot came out and greeted the passengers and announced that we would be getting off the ground shortly and we could expect a smooth flight to Fargo, North Dakota...everyone paused...and then laughed. I'm sure he's used a similar line hundreds of times...I don't care...I ate the whole thing up. As we pushed back from the terminal and taxied to the runway. This is when it happened. I thought I was going to pass out. Looking past my wife and down on the tarmac, I was amazed to see the gate agents, maintenance staff and luggage handlers all in a line waving to the passengers.

ARE YOU SERIOUS!!! PINCH ME!!! I MUST BE DREAMING!!!

Did they use magical pixie dust? Spike the kool-aid? Something "different" is going on in JetBlueLand and I for one love it. The rest of my flights and experience with JetBlue actually improved from there. Snacks and beverages were included in my airfare (what a concept). Complimentary high speed internet access in JFK allowed me to get caught up on work after eight days of suffering Bahamian style.

My hotels team members pride themselves on offering similar "wow" experiences for our guests. Feedback on the service they provide is overwhelmingly positive. On a daily basis, guests share JetBlue like experiences with me. In today's economic culture, you would think providing quality service would be the norm. Instead, as companies make staffing reductions and try to cut costs, we end up with even worse service then before. The part that drives me crazy is that providing exceptional service doesn't cost a penny...conversly...poor service can cost you millions. I'm guessing that JetBlue and my company have similar corporate cultures...hire the right people, provide quality training to new hires, encourage team members to genuinely care about their role, continue to provide training and eductional opportunitues, give them the tools needed to do the job, promote from within, and recognize team members that go above and beyond the call of duty.

"Doggy Dog World" or "Dog Eat Dog World"

Is it a "Doggy Dog World" or "Dog Eat Dog World"??? I think you'll find the answer is "both" when visiting Stephen Huneck's "Dog Mountain" in St. Johnsbury, Vermont.

Just a little background...my family and I have endured the loss of two of our dear pets in just the past twelve months. "Boo" our cat of 18+ years passed after a lengthy battle with a stomach tumor. "Holly" my young and amazing German Shepard passed very unexpectedly of bloat. She was 6+ years old. If you have a large breed dog...take time to learn about bloat (great site for information) and possible ways to prevent it. I had never heard of bloat but it is the second leading killer of dogs behind cancer.

Family friends have told us repeatedly to take time and memorialize our pets at St. Johnsbury's "Dog Mountain". Until this weekend I had only driven past the unique chapel built by Stephen Huneck. The chapel at Dog Mountain was built to memorialize the special bond that exists between families and their dogs. Over the years, visitors have made the chapel a memorial to all their beloved pets.

This past Saturday I picked my youngest son, Cass, up from work. At the last moment I had decided to take my new puppy "Crown" for the ride. Crown, is an Australian Shepard, who got his name after my favorite past-time...I mean drink. My wife, Becky, vetoed "Whiskey" saying it was an inappropriate name for my puppy. My wife runs a daycare out of our house. Becky was concerned about children going home or to friend's houses and telling them about playing with Whiskey at Becky's Playcare. Not exactly the exposure/reputation she was looking for. Crown is a beautiful puppy that has an amazing personality to match. This was Crown's first truck ride. After picking up my son, Cass suggested that we stop by Dog Mountain as it was on our way home.

Dog Mountain is both beautiful and secluded. You are encouraged to bring your companion(s) and experience the chapel, art gallery, agility course and hiking trails. The chapel along with Stephen Huneck's artwork make this a do not miss location for pet lovers.

The three of us loved the agility course. I was able to convince my son to role model for the dog. I fell over holding my side on more than one occasion as Cass completed obstacles. All the while, Crown sat there in amazement looking at his young master jump over bars...six inches high. Cass also scaled teeter totters and ramps at a vicious rate. Ultimately, Crown and I decided that for a human Cass was pretty agile. We're planning to enter him in some shows and hope to bring home some blue ribbons.

An hour away and worth every minute of the drive...

I absolutely love this time of year. The black fly season is finally coming to a close and all the little kiddies are going back to school (YES!). I'm not sure there is a direct correlation between black flies and my children but it makes you wonder. My oldest son, Matthew, is a varsity football player at St. Johnsbury Academy. Each year, my wife and I find ourselves traveling all over Vermont to watch the academy football games. These early morning treks allow us to take in some of the best Vermont has to offer.

This past weekend we traveled to Woodstock, Vermont (one of my wife's favorite locations...one of the most expensive for me...I mean us) for the season's first football scrimmage. Woodstock...in my humble opinion...is the way life should be. No matter how many adjectives I throw at it, you need to experience it for yourself. No internally lit obnoxious business signs here. Instead, handmade wooden signs adorn buildings. Beautifully manicured lawns surround homes, churches, and inns. You drive slow in Woodstock...everything happens at a more relaxed speed there. For the record...I'm not a "shopper". For that matter...I officially hate shopping. There's something about spending a day in Woodstock that fools my senses and allows me to think I'm not shopping. Whether you are a shopoholic or not, don't plan a visit to Vermont without including Woodstock in it.

When visiting Woodstock...set aside an hour or two for the Quechee Gorge area. Just minutes from Woodstock is "Vermont's Little Grand Canyon". This amazingly beautiful gorge offers a quick photo opportunity from the highway bridge or hours of exploring wilderness trails. Either way it's a natural wonder that old and young alike will always remember. The gorge is over a mile long and 165 feet deep. The trail system is well marked and my five year old went down and up the gorge trail system without needing to be carried.

My family LOVES eating at the "Farmer's Diner" located in "Quechee Gorge Village" shopping center. It is a one of a kind diner experience. While shopping is at the bottom of my "to do" list...eating good food would probably be at the top. You won't go wrong at the "Farmer's Diner". After eating at the diner, stroll through the different village shops. There is truly something for everyone. The village offers Vermont made furniture, Cabot Cheese, pewter, jewelry, handcrafts, glassblowing studio, antiques, wine, blacksmith shop, and a toy museum.

It probably goes without saying but my son and the Academy football team dominated Woodstock. After watching the scrimmage...I think it's going to be a great year for our local Hilltoppers.

Fire Scare...Check Your Home and Business

Two weeks ago I was conducting a meeting in one of my hotels' banquet rooms. Without warning a chandelier bulb made a popping sound and smoke puffed out in two different directions. As I went to turn off the power to the chandelier...flames mushroomed out. We immediately activated a fire pull station, grabbed a fire extinguisher, and evacuated the building. The fire never spread but it was a real scare.

We contacted the manufacturer and they immediately agreed to replace the bulbs with newer redesigned bulbs at no charge. To the manufacturer's credit, they have been nothing but incredibly responsive. I've searched the internet high and low for similar experiences and genuinely believe we may have had a freak accident. Just because I couldn't find similar experiences doesn't mean that they haven't occurred.

The bulbs were installed only four to five months ago as part of our "Going Green" initiative. We replaced 40 watt bulbs with these energy saving bulbs that only use 3 watts. It's amazing that more people/companies don't embrace doing what is right for our planet...while saving themselves money.

Swinging for a Promotion

My last blog entry was about my personal experience golfing at St. Johnsbury Country Club. I had mentioned that it was my first time swinging clubs in nearly three years. An interesting thing happened after playing that round. Twenty-four hours later, I was offered and accepted a promotion within my company. In addition, to my three hotels, I now oversee the Hampton Inn, Burlington, Vermont. In the future, I'll be sure to blog about all the great Burlington family events and attractions...BUT... I'll save that for another day.

At first the correlation between golfing and my promotion may not jump out at you. For me...it's perfectly obvious. I'm convinced that as soon as the President of my company read my blog he figured, "if Brett can find time to golf...then he can find time to manage more hotels". I know that sounds crazy but I think I'm on to something.

Sooooo, just to test my theory...I took my youngest son, Cass, golfing this weekend. I've sat by the phone all morning...President has called repeatedly but didn't mention another promotion (yet). That's when the lightbulb went on, I forgot to blog about my weekend. Once he reads I was golfing again...I'll be Vice-President (or without a job).

It's possible neither is going to occur...but my money is on the fact that I'll be golfing this weekend as "Vice President Loehr". I already have a tee time for this weekend and plan on making some important upper management decisions in between strokes.

By the way, my son (fourteen years old) shot under 100...I'm proud of him. Hit em' straight!

Going for the Green

I hate to admit it...I haven't golfed in almost three years.

Whew! I feel so much better getting that off my chest. I love golf. I was passionate about golf. I'm comfortable saying that I "was" obsessed. I think I've beaten the disease (sure...anyway).

Did I mention that I'm not good (that actually may be kind)? There's something about running four hotels, raising four children, and spending time with my wife that makes it difficult to golf. This past weekend we hosted our best friends from Maine. My buddy asked if I could squeeze in a round of golf and after considering it for a moment, I jumped at the opportunity. Neither of our wives play but I knew from past experience that they both enjoy riding around in the carts and laughing (at us). Five minutes after hanging up with my friend, we had a tee time at the St. Johnsbury Country Club.

St. Johnsbury Country Club is one of my favorite courses I've ever played. Considering I've golfed at courses around the world...that's actually saying something. It is extremely challenging. It's tight and occasionally wide open. It's flat and unassuming then steep and challenging. The greens appear to be the size of a postage stamp or large and undulating. Dog legs left and then right (sometimes both on the same hole). No matter how many times I play there, it always gets the best of me.

On my most recent visit, I must say I impressed myself (it doesn't take much). From the start, my swing was natural. I struck the ball purely and more often than not sent the little white ball in a straight line. I had lost some distance but all in all I was doing alright...for the first nine holes. After making the turn, it all came back to me. I remembered why golf takes over your thoughts and chews at your inner being. Over the next five holes, I donated one ball per hole to the woods, water, and evil little fairway gnomes that steal perfectly placed shots. I sprayed balls to the left, right, and on at least one occasion, took a divot that could have been mistaken as a green beaver pelt. Ok, so I won't be playing at the Masters anytime soon.

I love golf and will be finding/making time to get out on the course more often.

Kingdom Trails - Best Mountain Biking Trail Network in North America

Kingdom Trails has been around for fifteen years. This small grassroots organization, now maintains over 100 miles of trails. The trails are laid out by skiers so it's similar to glade skiing on a bike, fast but smooth. Their singletrack winds through fields, forests, along streams, near working sugar houses and farms.

I wasn't surprised when Bike Magazine awarded Kingdom Trails the Best Trail Network in North America and it's flagship trail " Sidewinder" won "Best Flow".

Kingdom Trails is located on mostly private land. Local land owners have granted Kingdom Trails permission to use their land. The Kingdom Trails map is great and highly detailed. The trails are rated so everyone (beginner to expert) can locate the best trails for their ability. The employees and/or volunteers that make up Kingdom Trails are the single best source for where to ride. Simply stop in the office and introduce yourself. They'll be more than happy to point you in the right direction.

One great place for kids of all ages is the pump track in the village. This bike park has all the features for fun and learning; berms, rollers, dirt tables, bumps and jumps in a small field down by the river.

For ten bucks a day or $50 for a season pass, this is New England's best "natural amusement park" you can find. The trails leave right from the village and you can ride the super smooth trails on Darling Hill. For more of a challenge there are trails on Burke Mountain as well. Some specific trails I recommend are "Coronary Bypass",

"Dead Moose Alley", "Sidewinder", "TapNdie" and "Kitchel" which is the the "swoopiest" (don't know if that is a word or not) but trust me when I say it is the "swoopiest" trail I've ever ridden. Did I mention it is smooth? Just to clarify Kitchel = swoopy and smooth...is that clear as mud?

My suggestion...get out of the office, kill your television, pack your bags and go ride Kingdom Trails! Trust me when I say...YOU WILL LOVE IT!

Rock of Ages

We visited Vermont's "Rock of Ages" on the 9th of July. They offer a great little visitor center as well as a nice gift shop at the site (oh yeah, a decent hot dog stand as an added bonus). You can purchase tickets at the gift shop for the bus tour to the top of the quarry which overlooks the quarry site itself. It's a bumpy ride up the access road and along the way you get to see the "leftovers" from many years of quarrying. Our tour guide, PJ, was very informative and knew all the answers to the many questions that were asked of him.

Usually you can observe the workers on the job site, but the week we were there, the quarry was shut down for their annual summer vacation. The first photo shows the gigantic cranes that are used to lower the workers 600 feet or more to the floor of the quarry. That little yellow basket that you see in the photo holds several men at a time. The crane system can lift weights of half a million pounds and you can see several huge chunks of granite that have been cut and hauled up to the top of the quarry. The zig-zag ladder system that you see on the side of the quarry is an emergency escape system. We all agreed that we'd prefer to have a sandwich and a blanket tossed to us from the heights before we would even make a half-hearted attempt to climb out on our own. I believe it was 660 feet to the bottom of the quarry, and each ladder was at least two stories in height. The last photo shows two lagoons that are a result of the quarry process. Barre produces white granite, a lovely material - and we dragged home several pieces from the "grout bin" to add a decorative touch to our herb garden. At the end of the tour, you are invited to go to the manufacturing plant and see the granite turned into finished pieces.

Rock of Ages guarantees all of its work forever - from statues to engravings to commissioned works of art, it's all guaranteed under the Rock of Ages logo. The observation deck in the manufacturing plant is high above the floor, and you can see the artists at their workbenches, the sandblasting areas, and the cutting, polishing, and shipping process for these large granite items. The plant also works on other colors of granite that are shipped in from other quarries owned by the same company. It is an interesting place and a lot more involved with artistic talents than we ever thought. Outside on the grounds, you can bowl on the granite bowling alley - an attempt in the 1960's to market another use for granite - it never took off. All in all, this was a really interesting side trip, and one I would certainly recommend for all ages.

Kingdom Trails Vermont...mountain biking the way it was meant to be!

After some early bumps and bruises, I can honestly say that I may turn out to be a halfway decent mountain biker (my kids wouldn't agree but they aren't 38). The beauty of mountain biking Kingdom Trails is that they offer something for everyone (and I mean everyone). Whether you want to bomb down the mountain on single track or spend a relaxing day exploring Vermont's Northeast Kingdom...they have what you and your family are looking for. Go no further than my waistline to know that I "enjoy" food...all shapes and sizes...I don't discriminate. Having said that, nothing makes a vacation more fun than exploring the region's different culinary offerings. Northern New Hampshire and Vermont offer a treasure trove of edible delights. When family or friends are in town, we visit some or all of the businesses listed below.

Starting with my absolute favorite...Chutter's General Store on Main Street in Littleton, Hampshire. Chutter's is a "DO NOT MISS" experience for young and old alike. It is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the longest candy counter. The children will be more excited than a trip to Disney (ok, that may be a stretch). The older crowd will find candy that will take them back to their childhood. The store also offers great quality souvenirs. Plan on taking time to walk historic Main Street. It offers a plethora of shopping opportunities. In addition to Main Street, stop in and experience the Littleton Grist Mill located directly behind Main Street. This working mill still produces an assortment of quality grains.

While in Littleton, bring your camera...be sure to get pictures of the new covered walking bridge and the historic Pollyanna statue. Littleton is the proud home to the Eleanor H. Porter, the author of "Pollyanna". While getting your photo taken with the statue...(spare me the jokes) rub her bronze shoe for "luck and gladness"...remember to "Be Glad".

Maple Grove Farms located in St. Johnsbury, Vermont is the world's largest producer of maple products. They offer guided factory tours, a small maple museum and a great gift shop. This automated production of maple products is most appreciated when you take time to experience the "old fashion" farm production of maple syrup. Plan on visiting the Goodrich Maple Farm where SEVEN generations have produced award winning maple syrup since 1840.

Cabot Farms, located in (you guessed it) Cabot, Vermont offers an excellent factory tour of its manufacturing plant. Start the tour with a brief movie on how the co-operative was formed and the history of the company. Take a guided tour through the working facility and learn the processes used to make award winning cheese. Afterwards, enjoy complimentary samples of all their quality cheeses. Surprisingly, a great tour for all ages (as long as they like cheese).

Cold Hollow Cider Mill and the world famous Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Factory are located in Waterbury, Vermont (just over an hour from the hotels in St. Johnsbury). The cider mill is in operation all year long and produces cider "the old fashion way". The mill still uses a press that was built in the 1920's. In addition to making cider this company also produces a large assortment of jams, jellies, mustards, sauces, fudge and other tasty treats. DO NOT LEAVE without sampling the apple cider donuts...they are out of this world. At Ben & Jerry's, a brief entertaining movie will take you through this amazing company's history. Afterward, enjoy a tour of the factory and then on to everyone's favorite part...the sampling room. Ben & Jerry's is open seven days a week except for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day.

It was with a combination of enthusiasm and heavy hearts that more than 40 of my employees and their family members participated in our first annual Relay for Life event. I designed custom shirts that memorialized our passed loved ones as well as our survivors.

As a team, we are committed to participating annually in the Caledonia County Relay for Life event. We raised thousands of dollars by conducting a community yard sale, a New England Patriots ticket raffle, created "Swim for a Cure" weekends and by selling food/drinks at the event.

All in all the event was one of the most memorable experiences I've had in a long time. We are looking to double the size of our team as well as the amount of donations collected in 2010. Please consider joining our team and do your part to find a cure.

New Hampshire and Vermont Kayak Canoeing Adventures

Living in Vermont's majestic Northeast Kingdom...there are days that I just need to pinch myself...I want to make sure I'm not dreaming. I know the economy has collapsed and that world is in turmoil BUT this past Sunday...for a few hours...none of it mattered. My son Cass and I took our newly acquired kayaks out for a day exploring the Moore Reservoir and Connecticut River. He's been a kayaking enthusiast for years and after a little prodding, he finally convinced me to invest in two boats. I was amazed at how tranquil the reservoir was for a Sunday afternoon. We were on the water for more than three hours and only saw one other boat.

The huge body of water which technically is located in New Hampshire was created when a hydro-electric company constructed a 178 foot tall dam in 1957. The Moore Reservoir is technically New Hampshire's fourth largest lake (how is that for worthless trivia) and covers more than 3500 acres. Most importantly for my family and I...it is New Hampshire's largest undeveloped body of water. I'm proud to say my house is exactly two miles from the Vermont boat landing. I'm embarrased to admit...it was my first time out on river since I moved here. Due to recent agreements between the hydro-electric company, government agencies, and conservation groups, it will remain a wildlife sanctuary indefinitely .

Located on the New Hampshire and Vermont border, the Connecticut River is nestled between my hotels located in Littleton, New Hampshire and St. Johnsbury, Vermont. The Moore Reservoir annually hosts the Littleton Trout Tournament and provides world class fishing opportunities. Besides trout, anglers can fish for northern pike, land-locked salmon, pickerel, perch, and huge bass. The region has just welcomed back its first bald eagles. In the years to come, I suspect the river and reservoir will once again become part of their habitat.

There are a handful of relaxing areas for families to enjoy a picnic and take in the views. Take time to search the shoreline for exotic looking driftwood.

Storyland - a great way to spend the day

There is a ton to love about New Hampshire's Storyland. My family's recent trip to the historic amusement park highlighted most of them. As we pulled into the parking lot, I was both surprised and concerned to find very few parking spaces available. The last thing I wanted to do is spend a hot summer day standing in lines. Speaking of lines, long ones were formed at the front gates. Families from all over were patiently waiting to get in. The lines moved quickly and surprisingly, they were the longest lines of the day. Once through the gates we found the park to be comfortable to walk around and the waits for rides...more than bearable. With 21 different rides to choose from and a hand full of shows we were excited to start experiencing the park.

My five year old needed to be convinced to get on her first ride or two and after that...look out! I would say the park appeals to grandparents, parents, and children (3-10 maybe a little older). The teenage crowd could get bored pretty quick. I love the fact that the park is clean and spacious. The staff is well trained and receptive to questions. I like the fact that the quality of food is "good" and that I didn't need to take out a second mortgage to feed my family. I'm almost certain that they allow families to bring in their own food and picnic. The shops throughout the park added to the experience. Several members of my family enjoyed browsing.

My youngest son and I enjoyed the costume shop...probably more then we should have. The different hats and props kept us entertained and I ended up buying a large obnoxious king's crown. I proudly wore it for the rest of the afternoon.

The rides and experience varied greatly. Many people hustled by some of my more favorite experiences. I loved the many small touches that made for memorable experiences and photo opportunities.

At "Heidi's House" an older man (her grandfather) sits watch. Very few take time to notice him or his trained chipmunk sitting in a can next to him. Both are very entertaining.

The park offers a great variety of rides. In addition, there are plenty of park areas where the parents can keep an eye on the kids while they burn off some extra energy. I give Storyland a "Do Not Miss" rating for families with younger children.

Cannon Mountain Aerial Tram

In June of 2009, my parents who live in North Carolina flew up for a long weekend. After spending some quality time reconnecting, we decided to take advantage of the aerial tram located in Franconia Notch State Park. The aerial tram takes you to the summit of Cannon Mountain. The summit was once home to New Hampshire's famous "Old Man of the Mountain" (his demise and memorial plans will be covered on this blog in the future). Purchasing tickets was painless and quick. Waiting for the tram allowed for every one's nerves to build with anticipation. Surprisingly, the tram itself is a comfortable and scenic ride. Halfway up the mountain you will pass fellow tram riders headed for the base of the mountain...be sure to wave "it's good luck". My father is very skittish of heights and once reaching the summit expressed his overall comfort with the ride. Once there you are free to explore numerous trails and take in the majestic views. There is no hurry or lines to wait in. You are free to take all day to soak up the views. Bring your own lunch or eat at the summit's restaurant (mostly fast food type fare). Weather can change quickly in the mountains so you would be wise to check the forecast and over pack versus the alternative. People with serious sensitivity to heights may want to avoid the experience. You never get much higher than the tops of trees but ultimately you do travel up a 2000 foot mountain (it's kind of hard to ignore that fact). On this particular day we had a total of eleven people in our party. The youngest as 5 and the oldest 60. Everyone loved the experience! ONE WARNING/SUGGESTION...you are on top of a mountain...wear appropriate footwear. The trails offer up tripping hazards galore. I would rate the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tram a "DO NOT MISS" for all age groups assuming the weather is cooperating.
